Biography:
Tarık Akan, whose real name was Tarık Tahsin Üregül, was born on December 13, 1949, in Istanbul, as the third child after an older sister and brother. His father, Yaşar Üregül, was a military officer, leading the family to live in Erzurum and Dumlupınar at different times due to his assignments. Eventually, they moved to Kayseri where Tarık completed his primary education. After his father’s retirement, the family returned to Istanbul and settled in Bakırköy, where Tarık completed his secondary and high school education. After finishing high school, Tarık enrolled at Yıldız Technical University and studied Mechanical Engineering. Before entering the film industry, he worked as a lifeguard at beaches in Bakırköy and also sold goods on the streets. Following his studies in Mechanical Engineering, he pursued journalism at the School of Journalism and graduated from there. In 1970, Tarık Akan participated in the Cinema Artist Competition organized by Ses magazine and won first place in 1971. This marked the beginning of his acting career, making his debut in the film “Emine,” alongside Filiz Akın and Ekrem Bora.

Tarık Akan is regarded as one of the prominent figures in Turkish cinema. Throughout a career spanning from the 1970s to the 2000s, he portrayed numerous memorable characters. Beginning in 1971, his filmography often delved into societal issues and individual tragedies. He garnered significant acclaim for his performances in films directed by Yılmaz Güney, known for their exploration of social themes. Films such as “Sürü” (1978), “Arkadaş” (1974), and “Canım Kardeşim” (1973) showcased his versatile acting skills and marked pivotal moments in Turkish cinema. Additionally, he delivered unforgettable performances in films like “Pehlivan” (1984), “The Girl with the Red Scarf” (1977), and “The Agha” (1985).
